Camshaft

Bearing

A part in which a journal is held in position and is able to rotate.

Air Cleaner/Filter

A device for filtering, cleaning, and removing dust from the air prior to entering an engine.

Cam Lobe

An off-center enlargement on the camshaft that converts rotary motion to up and down motion.

Camshaft

A shaft containing lobes that operate engine valves.

Carburetor

A device for automatically mixing fuel in proper proportion with air to produce a combustible gas.

Connecting Rod

A rod that connects the piston and the crankshaft.

Cooling Fins

Increases the surface area around the outside of the engine block to allow rapid cooling of the engine.

Crankcase

The housing of internal parts that keeps these parts aligned and protected.

Crankshaft

The main shaft of an engine that, working with the connecting rods, changes the up and down motion of the piston into rotary motion. This shaft runs the flywheel and the PTO (Power Take Off).

Cylinder

A round chamber to contain the explosion of the air/fuel mixture and guides the movement of a piston.

Flywheel

A wheel attached to the crankshaft to maintain perpetual motion, air flow for engine cooling, and contains magnets to create current for the magneto.

Fuel Tank

A storage device to hold fuel for an engine.

Gasket

A material (rubber, fiber, or steel) used between engine parts to seal out dirt and prevent leakage of engine oil, coolant, compression and vacuum.

Governor

A mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical device that controls and maintains engine speed under varying loads.

Magneto

Supplies the ignition spark on most small engines.

Muffler

A baffled chamber attached to the end of the exhaust port to subdue the noise created by the engine and create some back pressure.

Oil

Any of various kinds of greasy, combustible, and mineral matter used to reduce friction.

Piston

A cylindrical part that is closed at one end and connected to the crankshaft by the connecting rod. The force of the explosion in the cylinder is exerted against the closed end of the piston, causing the connecting rod to move the crankshaft.

Piston Rings

An expanding ring placed in the grooves of the piston to seal it against the passage of fluid or gas.

Ports

The openings in the cylinder block for valves, exhaust and inlet pipes.

Shroud

Metal covering of the flywheel and engine used as a protecting shield and an air passageway for cooling.

Spark Plug

A device inserted into the combustion chamber of an engine when given electrical current causes an arc igniting the air/fuel mixture.

Valve Spring

A spring attached to a valve to close the valve after it has opened.

Valve

A device for that opens and closes ports allowing controlled movement of gases.
