Cell Cycle

Interphase

Definition:
Example: Interphase is first stage that consists of three other stages, G1,S, G2. Cells spend most of their time in phase growing, and replicating

Interphase

Definition:
Example: The first phase is normal cell activity, the second is replicating DNA, and the third phase is the cell grows again...

Prophase

Definition:
Example: In prophase, the chromatin condenses into chromosomes and the spindle fibers in the centrioles start to extend toward the center

Prophase

Definition:
Example: the first stage of mitosis , and nuclear envelope goes away. DNA also condenses to form chromosomes

Metaphase

Definition:
Example: Metaphase is the 3rd phase in the cell cycle where the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.

Metaphase

Definition:
Example: The chromosomes line up along the middle (equator/metaphase plate)

Anaphase

Definition:
Example: The chromosomes are pulled apart to the poles of the cell and made into sister chromotid.

Anaphase

Definition:
Example: Anaphase is when spindle fibers begin to shorten and chromosomes separate, leaving sister chromotids to to move to each side

Telophase

Definition:
Example: when DNA is recondensed and it begins to seperate. (into cytokinesis)

Telophase

Definition:
Example: when the nuclear envelope reforms and two nuclei are formed with chromatin in it

Cytokinesis

Definition:
Example: Cytokinesis is when the parent cell is split into two identical daughter cells.

Cytokinesis

Definition:
Example: Cytokinesis is a phase in the cell cycle that splits apart the cell to form 2 new cells.

Cleavage Furrow

Definition:
Example: The place where the cell membrane and cytoplasm is split.

Cleavage Furrow

Definition:
Example: the outer membrane of a cell about to seperate into two during cytokinesis

Cell Plate

Definition:
Example: A cell plate divides the cytoplasm in cytokineses

Cell Plate

Definition:
Example: This is the middle or division line of a plant cell. When the plant cell undergoes cytokinesis, the cytoplasm divides and creates two cells.

Gap 1

Definition:
Example: The cell is growing and making proteins for DNA replication.

Synthesis

Definition:
Example: Each of the 46 chromosomes are duplicated by the cell.

Synthesis

Definition:
Example: Synthesis is the stage in interphase where the DNA replicates.

Gap 2

Definition:
Example: Where the cell grows again.

Gap 2

Definition:
Example: where the cell makes sure the cell has grown enough before it enters the next step

Chromosome

Definition:
Example: a chromosome is a condensed version of chromatin that contains DNA

Centromere

Definition:
Example: This is the center of a chromosome. Its job is to join the sister chromatids and the spindle fibers.

Centromere

Definition:
Example: The center of a chromosome where the sister chromotids meet.

Centrosome

Definition:
Example: a pair of centreols

Chromatin

Definition:
Example: relaxed DNA

Chromatin

Definition:
Example: Chromatin is the relaxed DNA that is found in the nucleus during the interphase stage.

Sister Chromatid

Definition:
Example: One chromosome that has been cut in half.
