An Tech IV: ortho instruments

Periosteal elevator

used to elevate periosteum or muscle from bone, often for placement of a bone implant

Rongeurs

-sharp cupped tip
-used to break up small pieces of bone that are then packed around fracture site to encourage healing

Bone-cutting forceps

-similar to rongeurs
-have paired chisel-like tips

Bone holding forceps

-designed to hold bone fragments together while implants are placed

curettes

used to scrape hard tissue, such as bone or cartilage

osteotome

-used to cut bone by pounding on the flat proximal end with a mallet
-tapered on both sides

chisel

-used to cut bone by pounding on proximal end with a mallet
-tapered on only one side

gigli wire

-use to cut bone
-t-shaped handles hook onto wire for better grip

trephine

-removes core of bone for biopsy
-T-shaped, reusable

Jamshidi needle

-removes core of bone for biopsy
-single use, disposable

Bone pin

-vary in: diameter, length, type of point
-Steinmann pin: placed in medullary cavity to stabilize fractured bone
-Kirschner wire: K-wire

interlocking nails

-similar to IM pins
-preplaced holes through pin allowing for screw placement

orthopedic wire

-AKA: cerclage wire
-typically used with: IM pins, Bone plates

external fixator

fractures are stabilized using pins placed horizontally through bone with connecting bar placed outside the body

Bone screws

2 designs
-CORTICAL: fully threaded screws that are designed for dense (cortical) bone
-CANCELLOUS: partially or fully threaded, made with wider threads. provide better grip in softer cancellous bone

bone plate

-they are fastened to the bone with bone screws for fixation and stabilization
-must be bent to match the curve of the bone

total hip prosthesis

-used to replace hip joint in case of severe degeneration
