personification

giving human-like traits to inanimate objects, animals, etc.

simile

a comparison using like or as - Bert looked his reflection and stated, "I am as hot as a sugar-glazed toasted pop-tart.

metaphor

a comparison without using like or as - Look at Beth swim! She is a fish in water!

onomatopoeia

the sound of an action is spelled like it sounds (Kaboom!, Bam!, Meow)

alliteration

the sound is repeated 2+ times (she sells sea shells by the sea shore)

mood

The book and/or author makes the reader feel while reading a story, listening to a song, and/or watching a movie

tone

attitude of the author toward the subject, story, text, etc.

idiom

a phrase established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words

oxymoron

a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction
