APES Chapter 3: Matter, Energy, and Life

Law of Conservation of Matter

Matter cannot me created nor destroyed

What are the 4 basic elements that make up most of the mass of living organisms?

Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen

List the 4 Organic Compounds

Carbs, Lipids, Protein, Nucleic Acid

How is an organic compound different from an inorganic compound?

Organic compounds have carbons

Where does most of the energy on Earth originate from?

The sun

What is energy?

The ability to do work

What is the difference between kinetic, potential, and chemical energy?

Kinetic - energy in moving objects, Potential - stored energy available for use, Chemical - stored in food

What is heat?

A means of converting energy into the necessary useful work to build and maintain biomonomers

Define extremophile

Ancient (mostly archea) single-celled organisms; the most primitive organism

Define chemosynthesis

Process in which bacteria use chemical bonds between inorganic elements.

What is the photosynthesis equation?

6CO2+6H2O+ solar energy --> C6H12O6 (sugar) +6O2

What is the cellular respiration equation?

6O2 + C6H12O6 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

How much energy is transferred up each trophic level and where does the 'lost' energy go?

10% is lost to metabolic processes (cellular respiration)

Define species

A population whose members can interbreed and produce fertile offspring

Define population

A group of organisms of the same species who live in the same area at the same time.

Biological community

A group of interacting populations that occupy the same geographic area at the same time

Define ecosystem

includes the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) features of an organism's environment

Define productivity

Synthesis of new organic material

Define biomass

The total mass of organisms in a given area or volume.

Define omnivores

Organisms that eat both plants and animals

Define detritivores

Consumers that gain energy from consuming dead matter (earthworms, insects, fungi, bacteria)

Which cycle(s) are atmospheric?

Hydrologic cycle, Carbon cycle, Nitrogen cycle, and Sulfur cycle

Which cycle(s) are sedimentary

Phosphorus cycle
