Endocrine System-Hormone Functions

ACTH

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone - Stimulates secretion of hormones by the adrenal cortex

OT

Ocytocin- Stimulates uterine contractions and milk ejection during suckling

ADH

Antidiuretic Hormone- Decreases water loss by increasing reabsorption of water into blood and decreasing urine production

Androgens

Increases sex drive in females

Thyroxine T4

Increases metabolism and BMR

Triiodothyronine T3

Increases metabolism and BMR

LH

Luteinizing hormone- Triggers ovulation and stimulates secretion of estrogen and progesterone

PTH

Parathyroid Hormone- Increases blood calcium levels by stimulating osteoclast activity

Epinephrine

Promotes fight-or-flight response

Norepinephrine

NE Promotes fight-or-flight response

PRL

Prolactin - Stimulates production and secretion of milk

Cortisol

Increases resistance to stress, increases blood glucose levels, and decreases inflammation

Melatonin

Helps to set the biological clock

MSH

Melanocyte-stimulation hormone - Darkens skin pigmentation

hGH

human Growth Hormone- Stimulates secretion of hormones that stimulate body growth and metabolism

Calcitonin

Decreases blood calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclasts

Thymosin

Promotes the maturation of T cells for the immune respose

FSH

Follicule- stimulating hormone - stimulates oocyte production and estrogen secretion

Insulin

Decreases blood glucose levels by transporting glucose into body cells- found in pancreas
