Anterior

Toward the front of the body or in front of a structure

Superficial

Toward the body surface

Deep

Away from the body surface, more internal

Medial

Toward or at the midline of a body or structure

Posterior

Toward the back side of the body or behind a structure

Frontal Section

A cut made along the long line of the body dividing it into front and back sections

Transverse Section

A cut made along the horizontal plane, dividing it into superior and inferior parts

Sagittal Section

A cut made along the long line of the body, dividing it into left and right parts

Anatomy

Study of the structure and shape of body parts and their relationship to one another

Inferior

Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure or the body

Physiology

Study of the function of the body or body parts; how they work or operate

Proximal

Close to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment to the body

Lateral

Away from the midline of the body or on the outer side of a structure

Distal

Farther from the origin of the body part or the point of attachment to the body

Superior

Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body

Intermediate

Between a more medial and more lateral structure
