Adaptations

Adapt

Changes (Physical and Behavioral) animals go through over years and years that allow it to meet its basic needs and help it survive in its surroundings

Basic Needs of Animals

Food, water, oxygen/air, shelter/protection

Basic Needs of Plants

Sunlight, food (made within the plant), water, oxygen/air

Behavioral Adaptations

Related to the things an animal does, or its actions that help it survive

Camouflage

Any coloring, shape, or pattern that allows an organism to blend in with its environment. This is a physical adaptation.

External Structure

Hibernation

A period of inactivity or sleep during the cold weather. This is a behavioral adaptation.

Inherited

Instinct

Behavior adaptation that animals are born with and already know.

Internal Structure

Structures that are found on the inside of an animal that help it survive. Example: A heart allows blood to circulate through the body.

Learned Behavior

A behavior adaptation that is learned by an animal, not passed on by its parents. It is not instinctive. Must be taught by another animal or learned by experience or practice.

Migration

A seasonal move to another home. This is done to find food, to mate, or a better climate. This is a behavioral adaptation.

Nonvascular Plants

Plants that absorb water and other substances directly through its structures. Examples are mosses, hornworts, liverworts

Physical adaptations

An adaptation of an organisms body parts or its coloring.

Vascular Plants

Plants with a system of tubes for transporting water and food. Examples are celery, trees and bean plants

Ways Plants Reproduce

Flowers and seeds, cones and seeds, spores
