Respiratory System

The major role is to get oxygen into your bloodstream and Carbon dioxide out of it

What is the major function of the respirator system?

1. Nose/Nasal Cavity
2. Pharynx
3. Larynx
4. Trachea
5. Bronchi
6. Lung

What is the pathway or air?

Nose and nostrils and Air enters through these
Has the mucus membrane which produce mucus which warms and moistens air and catches foreign particles

What is the nasal cavity?

Cilia

What does the nose contain that are tiny hairs that trap foreign particles?

Tube like passageway at the top of the throat
It receives food and liquids form the mouth and well as oxygen

What is the pharynx?

Contains vocal cord and is a passageway for air
Is under the pharynx

What is the larynx?

Flap of tissue in throat that keeps food from going in lungs

What is the Epiglottis?

Passageway in your throat
It is also called the windpipe
Takes air into and out of your lungs

What is the Trachea?

Two branches the come off the trachea
Cartilage ringed tubes that enter each lung

What are the bronchi?

Two large organs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
Main organ
Breathing in brings in oxygen
Exhaling brings out CO2

What are the lungs?

Small tubes in the lungs that branch off the bronchi like trees

What are the bronchial?

Located at the end of the bronchioles
They are tin sacs that hold gas
They surround capillaries and is the location from the gas exchange if oxygen and carbon dioxide
Oxygen passes through the thin blood vessel walls and C02 seeps into the Alveoli

What are the alveoli?

Large some shapes muscle below the lungs
When it contracts it expands the lungs out
When it contracts it compresses the lung back in to squeeze out carbon dioxide

What is the diaphragm?

Volume of the lungs increases and air flows in
Rib cage moves up and out
Diaphragm contracts and flattens expanding lungs

Explain how inhalation works?

Volume of the lungs decreases and air is pushed out
Rib cage returns to original position
Diaphragm relaxes and moves forward

Explain how exhalation works?

Disease that results in gradual loss of lung function
Difficulty filling lungs up with air

What is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)?

Airways are constantly inflamed
Overtime mucus producing cells increase and number And size, resulting in excess mucus
The mucus constricts your airways and makes it hard to breathe

What is Chronic Bronchitis?

Alveoli lose their ability to expand and contract
Causes the lungs to become less efficient in absorbing oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide
Always short of breath

What is Emphysema?
