Special Use Fibers

Elastomer

natural or synthetic polymer that can be stretched repeatedly to at least twice its original size
includes spandex & rubber

Power Stretch

important in end uses for which holding power and elasticity are needed
swimsuits, suspenders
CAN MOLD OR SHAPE THE BODY

Comfort Stretch

important in products for which only elasticity is desired
used in apparel & furnishing

Rubber

manufactured fiber in which the fiber forming substance is composed of both natural or synthetic rubber
natural rubber- comes from rubber tree

Spandex

first manufactured ELASTIC fiber
Lycra introduced it
Superior to rubber
Spandex aka Elastane

ARAMID

fiber with chemicals & fibers that resist heat
keeps its chemical properties even w/ a lot of heat placed against it
Kevlar- trade name from DuPont, known for strength
Used in firefighter apparel, ironing board covers

Glass

does not burn
chemical processing needed to convert the fiber
raw materials put into glass: sand, limestone, silica & combined w/ additives
flame retardant curtains, wall insulation, fire protection

Fiberglass

**

Metal Fibers

manufactured fiber composed of metal, plastic coated metal, or a core that is completely coated by metal
started to develop aerospace garments
CANNOT BE DYED
Often blended w/ other fibers
Aluminum, Copper, Silver

Novoloid

does not melt, burn, or fuse
expensive to produce ** not a lot on market currently
outstanding flame resistance, it carbonizes

PBI

properties similar to Aramid
space & aerospace applications
found in interior textiles, aircrafts, hospitals
high moisture regain

Saran

competes with olefin
looks & feels like plastic film, saran wrap
raw material that is melt spun
durable, seen in seat covers

Vinyon

PVC: polyvinyl chloride
used in film form
very heat sensitive
used for wigs, christmas trees, fishing line, nets

PVC Enviro Problems

causes enviro & human health problems
many chemicals put into it
