An earthquake and a tsunami. The ground starts to shake and Karana hears rocks falling from the cliff. She also sees a very low tide and great waves wash ashore.

When Karana spots the ship in Ch 28, how did she know that it was not an Aleut ship?

The ship looked different from the Aleut ship she had seen before.

What does Karana do that causes her to miss being rescued by the ship?

She returns home to put on her otter cape and cormorant skirt. When she gets to the mound she thinks about her ancestors and of her time on the island.
