Mechanical Digestion

begins in the mouth as food is chewed

Chemical Digestion

hydrochloric acid kills microorganisms, breaks down food and converts pepsinogen to pepsin

Pepsinogen

is inactive until it is converted to pepsin which breaks down protein

Gastrin

stimulates the release of more hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen

Cholecystolkinin

secreted by duodenum and causes gallbladder to contract and release bile

Bile

emulsifies fat (breaks it apart)

Amylase

breaks down carbohydrates and starches

Lipase

breaks down small fat globules

Protease

breaks down large protein molecules

Peptidase

breaks down small protein molecules into amino acids

Lactase

breaks down sugar molecules in milk
