Informative speech

designed to convey knowledge and understanding: describe an object, a process, or an event. Often uses visual aids

Object

anything that is visible, tangible, and stable in form

Process

a systemiatic series of actions that leads to a specific result or product: how something is made or how it works

Event

anything that happens or is regarded as happening whether in the past or present

Concept

a belief, theory, idea, notion or principle: usually in topical order focusing on the maion features or aspects of the concept...e.g. freedom

Guidelines for informative speeches?

1. don't overestimate what the audience knows
2. relate the subject directly to the audience (why is the information important to them?)
3. don't be too technical or use terminology the audience may not know
4. avoid abstraction
5. personalize the ideas

Description

a statement that depicts a person, event, or idea with clarity and vividness

Comparison

a statement concerning the similarities among two or more people, ideas, events, etc.

Contrast

a statement concerning the differences among two or more people, ideas, events, etc.

How to personalize ideas?

present the ideas in human terms that relate it in some fashion to the experience of the audience
