the main character

antagonist

the person usually found in conflict with the main character

foil

a character placed to parallel and contrast the main character's
actions

static

a character that never changes

dynamic

a character that undergoes a change with the story

round

a character described with many characteristics

flat

a character with one or two traits

stock

a stereotypical, minor character

Exposition

the beginning of the story (the introduction)

Conflict

tensions existing in the story in any of the following ways:
the character vs. nature
the character vs. him- or herself
the character vs. society
the character vs. another character

Climax

the most intense conflict within the story

Denouement/Resolution

the manner in which all tensions (including climax) are resolved

Third Person

The story is told by a narrator outside the action.

First Person

The story is told by one of the characters.

Theme

what the reader can learn and internalize from the story
EX: We can triumph over trials.
It is important to be loyal to family.
You should be true to yourself.
Honoring heritage helps you to understand who you are.

Point of View

who is telling the story

Plot

what occurs during the story

Setting

the time and place of story

Characters

people (and sometimes animals) in the story who are a part of the happenings
