Cells: Parts of a Cell

Cell Wall

Protects and supports the plant cell (Only in plants & some bacteria)

Cell Membrane

thin covering that is around ALL cells

Nucleus

Contains the genetic information (DNA or RNA) of the cell. It also directs the cell on what to do.

Cytoplasm

A jelly-like substance that supports and protects the cellular organelles

Mitochondria

Produces energy for the cell. The "power house" of the cell.

Endoplasmic Reticulum

a system of membranes and tubes that carries or moves materials from one part of the cell to another.

Ribosomes

Make proteins

Golgi Body (or Apparatus)

Receives materials from the ER and sends it to other parts of the cell. The "shipping & receiving center" of the cell.

Chloroplasts

Capture energy from the sun to produce food for the plant cell

Vacuole

Stores water, food, waste products, and other materials for the cell

Lysosomes

Contains chemicals that break down food particles and worn out cell parts. The recycling center of the cell. Found mostly in animal cells.

Smooth ER

ER (Endoplasmic Reticulum) that lacks ribosomes

Rough ER

ER (Endoplasmic Reticulum) that is studded with ribosomes

cell

Basic unit of life that makes up all living things

organelles

small structures that perform specific function in a cell
