Isthmus

A narrow strip of land that connects two larger land areas

Panama Canal

Built in 1914, a waterway that provides a link between the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean

Archipelago

Large group of islands

Urban Area

Location characterized by high human population density; Ex: city or town

Rural Area

Population density is very low; few homes and buildings; Ex: village or countryside

Literacy Rate

Total is the percentage of the population age 15 and above who can, with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life.

Plateau

Extensive area of flat upland usually bounded by an escarpment (i.e., steep slope) on all sides

Gross Domestic Product

The total value of goods and services produced in a country in a year, divided by the number of people living in the country

Ecotourism

The practice of using an area's natural environment to attract tourists

Dialect

Regional variety of a language

Commonwealth

A self-governing territory associated with another country; example: Puerto Rico

Refugee

Someone who flees to another country, usually for political or economic reasons

Cooperative

An organization owed by its members and operated for their mutual benefit

Cloud Forest

A moist, high-elevation tropical rainforest where low clouds are common
