Smart Phone

A mobile device that provides both phone and SMS text messaging functionality and general purpose computing functionality, such as web browsing and email plus running software apps. Usually have screens between 4 and 5.5 inches.

(computer science) written programs or procedures or rules and associated documentation pertaining to the operation of a computer system and that are stored in read/write memory

Binary

Notational system with 2 values per digit (zeroes and one). Computers process code in ________ because the transistors in the CPU and memory components also have two states (off and on).

Network

a group of two or more computer systems linked together

Internet of Things (IOT)

consumer electronic devices connected to each other and to the Internet. (thermostats, security systems, IP cameras, home appliances, streaming media)

Server

(computer science) a computer that provides client stations with access to files and printers as shared resources to a computer network.

laptop/notebook computer

a thin, lightweight mobile computer with a built in screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base

Processing

operate on (computer data) by means of a program.

User

a person who uses or operates something, especially a computer or other machine.

Applications

a program or piece of software designed and written to fulfill a particular purpose of the user.

Interface

a device or program enabling a user to communicate with a computer

Command

an instruction or signal that causes a computer to perform one of its basic functions.

ICON

a symbol or graphic representation on a screen of a program, option, or window, especially one of several for selection.

Operating System (OS)

the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.

Instructions

a code or sequence in a computer program that defines an operation and puts it into effect.

System Memory

The primary computer memory that holds instructions and data for currently executing software.

Random Access Memory (RAM)

a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

the brain of the computer.

Main Frame

computers used primarily by large organizations for critical applications; bulk data processing, such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning; and transaction processing.

Tablets

is a mobile device, typically with a mobile operating system and LCD touchscreen display processing circuitry, and a rechargeable battery in a single thin, flat package

work station

a special computer designed for technical or scientific applications. Intended primarily to be used by one person at a time, they are commonly connected to a local area network and run multi-user operating systems

desktop

a personal computer designed to be in a stationary location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or table

Motherboard

A circuit board that contains all of the computer system's main components.

Ergonomics

the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.

Solid State Drive (SSD)

is a type of mass storage device similar to a hard disk drive

all-in-one

A combination printer, scanner, copy machine and fax machine. Some exclude the fax capability or make it an option that houses every component except the keyboard and mouse inside the same case as the monitor. Its primary advantage is saving space.

Net Working

the linking of computers to allow them to operate interactively.

ultra book

Another term for a netbook computer.
