Progressivism

A collection of movements around the turn of the century, dedicated to improving America. Abuses of capitalism, political and society activity (get involved).

Middle Class

Group that will prod people to be more Reformed. Women will mostly lead this, get involved in social work as Reformers.

Jane Addams

Hull House 1882: Like a settlement house. She went oversea's to Britain after college and saw these settlement houses (for the poor). So she comes back and starts a Hull House-which helps immigrants be more successful in the U.S. (with language... etc...)

Mann Act 1910

Made it illegal for people to transport women across state lines for immoral acts (such as prostitution).

Muckrakers-Journalists:

A journalist that would expose "injustices (abuses)" how bad something is. Ex: Uptin Sinclair- "The Jungle

Led to some food laws in industries. "Meant to aim for the heart, struck the stomach

State Progressivism

Best example: In Wisconsin- Gov't Robert La Fallette (rep~ Progressive). Direct democracy: He wanted the voters to have more say than the "higher-ups," making the laws. They wanted initiative and Referendum, and recall.

Initiative:

People could sign a petition and form a new law (after votes).

Referendum:

Allows voters to vote for or against a law.

Recall:

Can sign a petition, then have a recall to fire a politician.

19th Amendment:

Women's suffrage, a form progressivism.

National Progressivism:

Theodore Roosevelt (R): Comes out as a war hero (Spanish war). His wife died after giving birth. Left his daughter to farm and get his head together. Came back, remarried, had 4 sons. Runs for governor of New York, progressivism. Then president. Some peop

Goes after large monopolies and breaks them up.

Square Deal-Coal mine strike ("Fair and Square"). Consumer issues~ Meat inspection Act. Pure food and drug act.

Meat inspection act:

Passed in response of "The Jungle." The inspections gad to be paid for, so only richer companies could pay. SO Smaller companies got "gobbled up" because they couldn't afford inspections.

Pure Food & Drug Act

Tried to look at labeling of food and drug products to make sure it said what was inside the product (ingredients and drugs).

Hawaii- Pearl Harbor:

Some Americans went to Hawaii to grow Sugar Cane and Pineapples (and because of Pearl Harbor). They're now not having to pay this rate if to sell these to the U.S. Economic boom in Hawaii. In early 1890's, for the first time Hawaii now has to pay tariffs.

Panama Canal

Completed in 1914: Teddy Roosevelt was there for the opening of the Canal. Makes it easier for us to move it's navy, and trade.
