Progressive Era Study Guide

Progressives-

reformers in the late 1800's and early 1900's
that worked to solve problems such as crime, disease, and
poverty as well as reform poor living conditions, unsafe
working conditions, social injustice, government
corruption, child labor, racial discriminatio

gilded age-

time period at the end of the 1800's to the early
1900's; looked golden but when examined closely really
gilded (something cheap covered in gold paint)

The Progressive Movement

time of political, social, and
economic change and reform in the US late 1800-early 1900

political machines

Political machines were unofficial
governments in cities during the nineteenth century that
used corruption to obtain and keep power; exchanged
favors for votes

Muckrakers

They were journalists who exposed corruption
in US politics/society

Upton Sinclair-

He was writer of the book called ??The
Jungle ?? which exposed the horrible practices of the
american meat packing industry.

Theodore Roosevelt-

American president who created
national park system and created stricter rules on the
american food industry(Meat Inspection Act, Pure Food
and Drug Act 1906 first progressive president assumed
office after William Mckinley was shot and killed

civil service reform-

helped to put the most qualified
candidates in civil service jobs (police, fire, IRS, state
trooper, other government jobs.) Candidates would take a
test and be ranked on skills/knowledge

William Taft-

second progressive president; followed in
footsteps of Roosevelt but accomplished less(not as
aggressive as Roosevelt) lost election of 1912 to Wilson

Woodrow Wilson-

3rd of the progressive presidents;
president during WWI; passed much legislation:
Underwood Tariff Act, 16th amendment, Federal Reserve
Act, Clayton Antitrust Act, Federal Trade Commission

Susan B. Anthony-

She was a women's suffragette who
was a key player in women's suffrage

Women's Suffrage-

the movement to give women the
right to vote

16th amendment-

allowed federal government to tax
personal income (income tax)

17th amendment

senators elected directly by the people

18th amendment

The amendment that granted women

Pure Food and Drug Act

-Act which created strict
restrictions of the food/drug industry and required more accurate labeling; regulated the manufacture, sale, and transportation of all food and drugs distributed in the
United States.

Conservation movement

worked to protect natural
resources and set up many sites as protected federal
lands. This today is known as our National Parks System,
for example the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Niagara Falls,
Badlands in South Dakota, Florida Everglades, etc

The Jungle

exposed the corruption and horrible conditions in the
meatpacking industry

John Dewey-

an important reformer in education,
created new models for teaching children that are still used
today; created AMA (american medical association) to help
educate doctors and nurses

Initiative-

Allowed citizens to force a vote on certain issues
without having to wait on public officials

Citizens could vote directly on proposed
laws

Recall

Citizens have the power to remove officials from
office

Women's Trade Union League-

first all women's union
that worked to protect women's rights in the workplace

The act of banning alcohol

Booker T. Washington-

An African American activist
who agreed to follow the Jim Crow laws; former slave that
believed gaining economic opportunities was most
important for improving the lives of African Americans

W.E.B. DuBois-

An African American activist who
created the tuskegee university; demanded immediate
equality for all African Americans

NAACP-

The National Association for the Advancement
of Colored people. They pushed for the passing of laws
that would help african americans thrive

Explain the cause of the Progressive movement:

caused
by conditions created by the Industrial Revolution; tried to
improve society morally and politically

Role of civil engineers/city planners:

pass zoning laws,
building-safety codes, create public parks, create proper
waste disposal system (sewers), create safe water system,
and created street paving and proper bridge building
projects

Boss Tweed:

infamous boss of political machine
Tammany Hall in NYC; stole apprix. $200 million from the city treasury

What years did the Progressive Movement span?

It lasted about 30 years, from 1890 to 1920

What caused reform of the food and drug markets?

Muckrakers brought the corruption to the public and presidential eye.

Why was there a need for workplace reform?

Workers were not getting paid enough, treated poorly, long work hours, worked in dangerous conditions

The 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

caused outcry
amongst people for building/fire safety laws to be passed.
Fire broke out on 10th floor of factory and many women
and children working in the factory were trapped in; no
proper exits.doors were locked. Many died as a result of
the fire

Negative impact of prohibition-

organized crime/mobs
develop, U.S. loses money, black market for alcohol

What were some of the changes made as a result of
workplace reform?

workers would gain insurance and
better safety measures taken; child labor reforms;
minimum wage/ hour laws passed

Business response to workplace reform-

many tried to
challenge laws in court because they were losing money;
some were overturned some were upheld. Most laws were
regulated on the state level rather then by the federal government

Temperance movement-

women were leaders behind it
as well as Women's Christian Temperance Union; believed
many of the issues of American society was due to
alcohol; pushed for passing of the 18th amendment

Organizations that fought for Women's Suffrage:

National American Woman Suffrage Association
(NAWSA)and the National Women's Party (NWP)

What was the goal of the NAACP?

They wanted to close
the difference between white and black people; ensure the
13th, 14th and 15th amendment for all; bring an end to Jim
Crow Laws/segregation
