valacyclovir
(Valtrex)

- antiviral
- for HSV & shingles (treats, not cures)
- ADR: HA, neutropenia, inc. liver enzymes, N, abd pain
- take when outbreak present
- prophylactic to cold sores

ondansetron
(Zofran)

- antiemetic
- for N/V
- give over 2-5 min IVP*
- ADR: HA, dry mouth, C/D
- CI: heart conditions

diphenhydramine
(Benadryl)

- antihistamine
- for allergic reactions
- ADR: drowsy, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, paroxysmal reaction
- avoid alcohol & driving

morphine

- ADR: drowsy, dizzy, fatigue
- no driving, take at night
- no antacids

fentanyl transdermal
(Duragesic patch)

- analgesic
- for moderate to severe pain
- ADR: CNS depression, constipation, dry mouth
- no heating pad over patch (inc. dose)
- patch does not have to go on area of pain

fluticasone
(Advair Diskus)

- steroid inhaler
- for asthma (maintenance & prophylactic tx)
- NOT for acute asthma attack
- ADR: bronchospasm, HA, insomnia
- lung sounds
- give bronchodilator first
- rinse mouth

sodium polystyrene sulfonate
(Kayexelate)

- corticosteroid
- to decrease potassium levels
- ADR: hypoK, hypoCa, metabolic acidosis, constipation
- avoid laxatives

alprazolam
(Xanax)

- benzo
- for anxiety, panic d/o, insomnia
- ADR: resp depression, drowsy, dizzy
- monitor for abuse
- avoid alcohol

warfarin
(Coumadin)

- anti-coagulant
- for thrombosis (prophylaxis & tx), PE, afib
- CI: uncontrolled bleeding & HTN
- use soft toothbrush
- monitor PT/INR
- antidote: Vit K

methylprednisolone
(Solu-Medrol)

- steroid
- to decrease inflammation
- ADR: delirium, GI, fluid retention, wt gain (Cushing's), adrenal suppression
- monitor blood sugars (can inc.)
- monitor for GIB
- longterm use -> osteoporosis, delayed wound healing
- taper off slowly!

atorvastatin calcium
(Lipitor)

- for hyperlipidemia
- monitor for rhabdomyolysis (break down of muscle -> muscle aches)

ceftriaxone

- for Gonorrhea (only one!)
- ADR: c diff

metformin
