ASHA code of ethics

Purpose is to make sure client is well taken care of and protect the reputation/integrity of the profession

Requirements for ASHA

Clinical experience; 25 hours of observation, 375 patient contact hours (10 hours hearing screening), have a patient in each category of ASHA big 9

Requirement for schools

TCC from Dept. of Education; suicide prevention training, background check, picture of you, professional growth plan (90 credits, 5 years)

Requirements for state

Each state has their own requirements and code of ethics, you have to pass them

Indiana requirements

Pay property taxes, criminal background check, recent picture of you, tested on state laws, renew license every 2 years

ASHA continuing education requirements

30 hours every 3 years

State continuing education requirements

depends on state, Indiana is 36 hours every 2 years

CFY

Clinical fellowship year; 36 weeks; transition from being a student to being an independent SLP

Part of ASHA that accredits university SLP and Audiology programs, how often?

CAA (Counsel Academic Accreditation); every 8 years

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act; exists so we can keep our information private

MRSA

infection caused by staph; likely to come in contact at a hospital; starts off as a blister and gets bigger; typically antibiotic resistant; if it's covered it cannot spread; weaker people do not survive

Hepatitis A

Transferred through fecal matter
Liver disease
There is medication/treatment for it
Symptoms: fatigue, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain/discomfort beneath lower ribs

Hepatitis B

Viral infection that attacks liver
Commonly transferred by childbirth/ contact with blood or other body fluids
Symptoms: abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, jaundice

HIV

Not spread by shaking hands or being in the same room
If working around the mouth wear gloves
Virus that attacks immune system by destroying white blood cells

OSHA, Universal precautions. What is the purpose?

Occupational Safety and Health Administration; federal committee designed to keep people safe on the job; blood in SHARPS containers, handwashing protocol

What should you do if your client has a nose bleed?

give them several tissues to put on their nose and have them squeeze their nose for 10 min

What should you do if your client faints?

have them put their head down on desk, if they fall and are injured, call campus police

What should you do if your client has a seizure?

do not restrict movement, do not put anything in their mouth, try to get them on the floor and away from things that can hurt them, wait for it to end, do not panic; take them to hospital if it is their first seizure, if they are injured during seizure, i

What should you do if your client is choking?

ask them are you choking, symptoms of choking are similar to heart attack or asthma attack, if you do not know the Heimlich maneuver, open door and yell for someone who does, if they are not choking look for an inhaler, if it's a heart attack yell for sup

What is TB? How is it spread?

Caused by germ you inhale, goes into lungs
Can get into brain/spine
Only 10% of people who come in contact will have an active case
No cure

Spread by head to head contact, contact with clothing, etc
Can last more than a week off of someone's head
