Religion has been a source of territorial conflict for a long time. Please list two different possible scenarios of why these conflicts arise and then provide a real-life (past or present) example of each scenario.

1. When religion and the government are in conflict. When the government ascribes to a certain religious belief, and this belief goes against the social values of every-day citizens conflict arises. One example of this is the Taliban attack of Western social values and other religions in Afghanistan after their raise to power. When the Taliban took over Afghanistan they set up strict social rules based on their understanding of the religious scriptures that did not follow the social behaviors Afghani citizens were accustomed to. Examples listed on the textbook include: beating men for shaving their beards and women stoned for committing adultery, as well as destroying invaluable Buddhist artifacts and art. 2. When two religions dispute the same territory. The clearest example of two religions disputing the same territory in present day is in the Middle East. The fact that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism share a common narrative becomes an issue when they are all disputing the Holy Land and all want to have power and control over the Holy City of Jerusalem. This conflict is further exacerbated by the artificial boundaries created for the state of Israel after WWII to provide the Jewish diaspora a place to call home. Because not all three religions can share equal power over the same territory, the best solution would be to have a non-religious organization (such as the U.N.) to control the territory disputed and have the three religions enjoy the historical sites in equal measure. Unfortunately, resolving the Palestine-Israeli conflict may be slightly more complicated and with bigger compromises needed by both sides.
