Lecture 14

Direct Ascent

Launch a huge rocket directly to the moon, and carry along everything that you would need to launch and get back to Earth (Fuel, another rocket, etc.). Would need a rocket larger than Saturn V to get there. THIS WAS A "NO".

Lunar Orbit Rendezvous (LOR)

Could be done with the Saturn V rocket and two smaller spacecraft. One craft would orbit the moon while the other would detach and descend. this was chosen

N-1 Rocket

original soyuz program rocket. never successful

Earth Orbit Rendezvous (EOR)

idea led by von Braun, that two large rockets would be launched in to Earth orbit, where they would then be used to assemble another spacecraft; then, that spacecraft would be flown to the moon.

Valentina Tereshkova

First woman in space. Goal was to compare effects of spaceflight on woman and compare it to that of the men that had flown.

Voskhod programme

2nd Soviet human spaceflight project. First spacewalk.

First space walk

Aleksey Leonov was the first man to walk in space in 1965. problems getting back into the capsule.

Project Gemini

second stage in the U.S. program to reach the Moon, in which an astronaut team connected with another spacecraft in orbit

Apollo Program

a program of space flights undertaken by US to land a man on the moon

Apollo 1

intended to be more sophisticated but fire ignited during test and killed 3 astronauts.

Soyuz Program

3rd crewed spaceflight program for the USSR. Would launch components into space that would be docked with to form a rocket capable of getting to the moon

Apollo 8

First manned spacecraft to orbit the moon

Apollo 11

1st successful moon mission by the US in 1969
