a law passed by Parliament in 1765 that required the colonies to house and supply British soldiers

Townshend Acts

passed in 1767; taxed imported goods glass, tea, paper, and lead

Intolerable Acts

a series of laws enacted by Parliament in 1774 to punish Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party.

Declaratory Act

Act passed in 1766 just after the repeal of the Stamp Act. Stated that Parliament could make decisions for the colonies "in all cases whatsoever

Sons of Liberty

Groups of colonists who organized themselves to protest against the British government; led by Samuel Adams

Patrick Henry

led the opposition to the Stamp Act of 1765 and is well remembered for his "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" speech

Stamp Act Congress

group of colonists who protested the Stamp Act, saying that Parliament couldn't tax without colonist' consent

Sugar Act

1764; lowered tax on molasses, wine, coffee, and sugar to try to encourage colonists to stop smuggling and pay the tax
