Chapter 11 Vocabulary Structure and Matter #NUNNIKITTY #YAY

Element

A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances. Elements are the building blocks of all matter.

Atom

The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of an element.

Nucleus

The central core of an atom.

Electron

A particle in an atom that has a negative charge. An electron holds an atom together.

Proton

A particle inside the nucleus of an atom that has positive electrical charge.

Neutron

A particle inside the nucleus of an atom that has a neutral eletrical charge.

Does the amount of atoms matter to make an element?

Yes because hydrogen has 1 atom and oxygen has 2.

Molecule

Two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds.

Can molecules contain atoms of the same elements or different?

Same because otherwise it would be a mixture.

Chemical Symbol

The letter or letters that abbreviate an element's name.

Periodic Table

The standardized table that organizes the elements by their properties.

The same periodic table is used all over the world.

This is what standardized means.

What are the numbers on the periodic table for?

The count how many protons they have.

Compounds

Substances that are made of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined.

Chemical Reaction

The process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances.

Chemical Formula

A shorthand way to describe the chemical makeup of a compound.

Weight

A measure of the pull of gravity on an object

Mass

The amount of matter that makes up an object.

Volume

The amount of space taken up by an object.

Which has a definite shape, a solid or liquid?

A solid because of the particles are packed together.

Boiling Point

The temperature at which bubbles of gas begin to form throughout the liquid.

Gases

Matter that is made up of particles that are far apart and don't have a defininate shape.

Condensation

The process in which gases cool, forming droplets of liquid.

Mixtures

A combination of two or more materials that don't bond together to make a compound.

Solutions

Mixtures in which the substances spread out evenly and don't settle.

Solubility

The amount or substance that will dissolve in a particular solvent.

Saturated

A solution contains all the solute that can be dissolved without changing the temperature.

Dilute

A solution is far from being saturated.

Concentrated

Contains so much solution that is close to being saturated.
