Stephen Austin had to choose only moral and hardworking settlers. The settlers had to become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic Church.

What were the American complaints in the colony?

They (Americans) used to govern themselves and now they didn't governed themselves. They resented taking orders from Mexican officials. All official documents had to be written in Spanish.

What were the Tejano complaints in the colony?

They complained that the American settlers had to come to Texas illegally. Also, most new immigrants showed little respect for Mexican culture and had no intention of becoming citizens.

What did the Mexican government do in response to the complaints about the colony?

They closed Texas to further American immigration. The government sent troops to Texas to make sure people were following the laws.

1833, he showed the demands of the Texans to Santa Ana. Santa Anna put Austin in jail for 2 years.

Why was the South Pass better for pioneers?

It was low and flat enough for the pioneer's wagons to go through.

Why was Oregon attractive for new settlers?

People said that it was "Pioneer's Paradise" because the weather was sunny and disease was unknown, trees grew as thick as hairs on a dog's back and farms were free for taking.

Why did president Polk hope New Mexico and California territories would be for sale? What did he do to try and get this land?

He could expand America more and he wanted to make a treaty with Mexico. He sent a representative to Mexico to try and buy them, but Mexico refused.

Why and how did the war break out in Texas?

The Mexican soldiers fired on the Americans who were patrolling around Rio Grande. 16 Americans were wounded or dead. Mexicpo invaded our land.

How did American gain California?

Fremont made a fight against Mexico in California. He put Guadalupe Vallejo the Mexican commander in northern California in jail. Fremont raised flag with grizzly bear drawn from blackberry juice and declared California as the Bear Flag Republic.

Tell me about the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

America and Mexico made a treaty in 1848 that Mexico would give America California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona all of Texas, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming for $15 million.
