PSCI: Unit 1 Spring Molecules to Atoms Review Classifying matter

Atom

the smallest particle of an element

colloid

a mixture that contains some particles that are intermediate in size between the small particles in a solution and the larger particles in a suspension (ex: fog)

Compound

a substance that is made from two or more simpler substances and can be broken down into those simpler substances

element

a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances (ex. one of the substances listed on the periodic table)

heterogeneous mixture

a type of mixture in which the parts of the mixture are noticeably different from one another (ex. a handful of sand which varies in grain size and color)

homogeneous mixture

a type of mixture in which the substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance in teh mixture from another (ex. stainless steel or salt water)

pure substance

matter that always has exactly the same composition (ex. an element or compound)

matter

Something that has mass and exists as a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma or Something that occupies space and can be perceived by one or more senses; a physical body, a physical substance, or the universe as a whole.

reactivity

the property that describes how readily a substance combines chemically with other substances

solution

a mixture that forms when substances dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture

suspension

a heerogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time

homogeneous mixture (example that we breathe daily)

air is an example of

element (example we encounter daily and is given to people who are having difficulty breathing)

oxygen is an example of

heterogenous mixture example (specifically an example of a suspension when shaken - tasty on salads)

italian salad dressing is an example of a(n) _____________________ specifically a(n) ______________

homogeneous mixture example (specifically an example of a solution - very refreshing on a hot summer day)

lemonade is an example of a(n) _____________________ specifically a(n) ________________

example of a heterogenous mixture (it gets in your shoes when you go to the beach)

sand is an example of a(n)

homogeneous mixture example (it is 95% copper or 97% zinc plus other metals) and element example (what we think they are made of)

a penny is an example of a(n) ______________ but the copper is an example of a(n) ______________
