Unit 6 Life Science 2B

Species

A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring

Adaptation

a characteristic that improves an individuals ability to survive and reproduce in a specific environment.
Genetic mutations lead to these favorable traits that allow populations to survive.

Evolution

The process in which inherited characteristics with a population change over generations which can cause new species to arise.

Fossils

The remains or physical evidence of an organism preserved by geological processes.

Natural selection

The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do; a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution (how it works).

Generation time

The period between the birth of one generation and the birth of the next generation.

Speciation

The formation of a new species as a result of evolution.

Selective Breeding

The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired characteristics
When animals or plants with a favorable trait is picked by a human to only reproduce those organisms so that only those traits can be passed on.

Trait

A genetically determined characteristic.
