Latin Chapter 26 Translation - Idus Martiae

Quintus, ubi multitudinem hominum vidit pro theatro Pompei stantem, cognoscere cupiit causam tanti conventus.

When Quintus saw a crowd of men in front of the statue of Pompei theatre, he desired to know what reason caused a gathering so great.

And so, he wormed his way through the crowd towards the front row, from where he was able to see all.

plurimi senatores aliique viri insignes theatrum inibant.

Very many senators and some other distinguished men entered the theatre.

deinde Quintus vidit Gaium Iulium Caesarem cum magistatibus intrantem.

Then Quintus saw Gaius Julius Ceasar with the magistrates enter.

togam purpuream gerebat et in capite coronam lauream.

He was wearing a purple toga and a laurel crown on his head.

omnes senatores surrexerunt Caesaremque salutaverunt.

All senators rose and greeted Ceasar.

dum sedet, multi senatores eum circumstant.

While he sat, many senates surrounded him.

Then a certain senator asks him something and he held his toga in his hands.

eo ipso tempore alter senatorum eum pugione ferit; tertius bracchium vulnerat.

At that very moment, one of the other senators struck him with a dagger; a third senator wounded his arm.

Caesar surgere temptavit, sed coniurati eum undique oppugnabant.

Caesar tried to get up, but the conspirators were attacking him from all sides.

inter alios Caesar Brutum vidit amicum suum intimum in se currentem; 'et tu, Brute?' inquit.

Among others Ceasar saw his closest friend Brutus running towards him; 'And you, Brutus?' he said.

Then he wrapped his head with a toga and fell down to the ground, pierced with twenty-three wounds.

coniurati Caesarem reliquerunt in terra iacentem ante statuam Pompeii.

The conspirators left Caesar behind lying on the ground before the statue of Pompei.

They burst out of the theatre and shouted to the people: 'The tyrant is dead; we have freed the people of Rome.'

sed omnes taciti stabant, re dira obstupefacti.

But they stood silently, dumbfounded by the dreadful event.

Quintus se vertit et domum cucurrit.

Quintus turned and ran for home.

ubi domum advenit, patrem vocavit.

When he arrived home, he called his father.

Flaccus eum anxius audivit omnia narrantem.

Flaccus anxiously listened to all his story.

paulisper tacuit.

For a little time he was silent.

tandem 'quid iam futurum est?' inquit; 'respublica in magno periculo est. sine dubio tumultus videbimus. tu, Quinte, cavere debes.'

At last he said 'What is going to happen? The republic is in great danger. Without doubt we shall see an uproar. You, Quintus, you ought to be aware.'

quinto die post mortem Caesaris, ubi Quintus ad forum advenit, ingentem turbam vidit totum forum complentem.

On the fifth day after the death Ceasar, when Quintus arrived at the Forum, he saw a huge crowd filling the whole forum.

He was not able to reach the road which lead to the school of Heliodorus.

itaque in ultima parte fori manebat gradusque templi ascendit, unde omnia videre poterat.

And so, in the furthest part of the forum he remained and went up the steps of the Forum where he was able to see.
