1763

French and Indian War Ends (Seven Year's War in Europe) France loses its territory to America. Treaty of Paris.

1776

Declaration of Independence signed.

1783

Treaty of Paris signed- ends the Revolutionary War, Britain recognizes U.S. Independence.

1788

Constitution is approved- will replace the Articles of Confederation.

1793

Invention of the Cotton Gin by Eli Whiteney- contributes to the spread of slavery.

1803

Louisiana Purchase- doubles the size of the U.S.

1812-1814

War of 1812- The British burn Washington, D.C., "Star Spangled Banner" is written.

1823

Monroe Doctrine is issued- declaring the Americas off-limits to European expansion.

1838

Trail of Tears- Cherokees forced at gun point to relocate in Oklahoma Territory.

1846-1848

U.S. War with Mexico- acquired Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

1861-1865

Civil War.

1863

Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

1868

14th Amendment passes- prevents states from denying rights and privileges to U.S. Citizens.

1882

Chinese Exclusion Act passed.

1896

Plessy v. Ferguson- Supreme Court establishes the principle of "separate but equal".

1898

Spanish American War- U.S. acquires Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

1917

Wilson asks congress to declare war on Germany and the U.S. enters WWI.

Russian Revolution- communism first established as a form of government.

19th Amendment passes- women receive the right to vote.
