created by Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, described foreign exploits as being adventures. Something that young boys would dream of.

Joseph Pulitzer

writer and creator of the Yellow Press. Led people to believe that the situations occurring in Cuba were worse, that they were in reality.

William Randolph Hearst

another writer and creator of the Yellow Press. Deceived the people to believe that the problems in Cuba were worse than they actually were.

Joseph Strong

a reverend that wrote the book "Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis" which was inspired by the yellow press

Alfred Thayer Mahan

Wrote the book "The Influence of Sea Power upon History". Made the argument that control of the sea was the key to being the most dominant in the world. He helped to stimulate the naval race within the many great powers.

James G. Blaine

was secretary of state in both Garfield and Harrison's administration. Started the 'Big Sister policy'

Big Sister Policy

rallied Latin American nations to open up their markets to Yankee traders

Pan-American Conference

was held in Washington D.C. Led the way for a long and important series of inter-American assemblages

Richard Olney

President Cleveland's secretary of state. Made the point that if Britain wanted Venezuela they would be violating the Monroe Doctrine

Great Rapprochement

Britain's attempt of a friendship with the American. Became the start of their foreign policies at the beg. of the 20th century

Queen Liliuokalani

strong-willed Hawaiian queen that insisted that natives from her country should control the islands.

Theodore Roosevelt

was assistant secretary during the presidency of Mckinley. Made many major decisions regarding the United States' journey towards imperialism.

Henry Cabot Lodge

believed, through Darwinism that the earth only belonged to those who were most fit for it.

The Maine

the American steam ship that exploded in the Havana harbor. Was a factor that led to the war with Spain

Teller Amendment

the amendment made by the United States that said that if they won against Spain, they would then free the Cubans

John D. Long

the navy secretary that helped lead the American navy to war with Spain

George Dewey

a commodore, attacked and destroyed the Spanish fleet. Was in favor of helping the Filipino people become free.

Emilio Aguinaldo

Filipino rebel leader that tried many times to lead them to independence.

Rough Riders

a group of cowboys and athletes that had volunteered to fight for their people. Organized by Theodore Roosevelt.

Anti-Imperialist League

were completely against expansion and fought against McKinley's ideas of them.

Foraker Act of 1900

an act made for the benefit of the Puerto Rican people. Gave them a popular govt. and also gave them U.S citizenship. This led to major improvements in sanitation, education, and transportation in Puerto Rico

Insular Cases

made the decision that the Constitution would not follow the flag in the Philippines and Puerto Rico.

Platt Amendment

the amendment that gave the Cubans the right to write their own amendment.
