Titration Vocabulary

Titration

a procedure used to determine the unknown concentration of a substance (analyte) using a know concentration of a substance (titrant)

buret

a piece of glassware used for dispensing accurate volumes

titrant

the substance of known concentration (usually liquid) added to the analyte in a titration

analyte

the substance being analyzed with unknown concentration

equivalence point

the point in a titration at which neutralization occurs. The number of moles of H plus equals the number of moles of OH negative

end point

the point in a titration at which there is a sudden change in a physical property, such as indicator color change, pH, conductivity, or absorbence

indicator

a compound having a physical property (usually color) that changes abruptly near the equivalence point of a chemical reaction at a specific pH

standard solution

a solution whose concentration is known as well as the amount used in the titration

neutralization reaction

a reaction between an acid and a base that yield salt and water
