Born on September 6, 1157 at Beaumont Palace, Oxford- Beaumont
Palace was built by King Henry I outside Oxford�s North Gate, and he
came to stay here at Easter 1133
His parents are Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine- Henry II, first
of the Angevin kings, was one of the most effective of all England's
monarchs- Eleanor of Aquitaine (1137-1152) was one of the most
powerful and influential figures of the Middle Ages
He is Elisabeth II 21st great-granduncle

covering half of France, all of England, and parts of Ireland and Wales
He rebelled against his father twice before he became King of
England in 1189
Reigned for 9 years, 8 months, and 30 days-he was irresponsible and
hot-tempered, possessed of tremendous energy, and capable of great cruelty
Started his reign as king on July 6, 1189, at the age of 31- at

Richard I spent 6 months out of his 10 year reign in England- He
claimed that England was "cold and always raining.
"Richard was said to declare, "If I could have found a
buyer I would have sold London itself."- he said this because he
was trying to raise funds for a crusade
The 3rd Crusade:In Sicily, Richard and took Messina by storm on
October 4-this led to the election the native Tancred of Lecce by the Sicilians
Richard and the crusaders conquered Cyprus-he did this on the way to acre

It was in Cyprus that Richard married Berengria- he did this while at Limassol
Richard and the Crusaders attacked Acre on June 8, 1191-Acre fell in
July 1191
On September 7 Richard�s victory at Ars?f put the Crusaders in
possession of Joppa
Richard led his forces to within a few miles of Jerusalem twice
But, Richard failed to recapture Jerusalem- There were fierce
quarrels among the French, German, and English contingents

After the Crusade, Richard was discovered at Vienna in December 1192
and imprisoned in the duke�s castle at D�rnstein
Later, he was handed over to Henry VI, who kept him at various
imperial castles- had a colossal ransom of 150,000 marks
Richard I composed this during his captivity: No one will tell me
the cause of my sorrow, Why they have made me a prisoner here.
Wherefore with dolour I now make my moan; Friends had I many but help
have I none. Shameful it is that they leave me to ransom, To languish
here two winters long.

After Captivity Richard returned to England and was crowned for the
second time on April 17- fearing that the independence of his kingship
had been compromised
Within a month after he went to Normandy, and never returned
Richard spent his last five years were spent in warfare against
Philip II-they were interspersed with occasional truces
Richard I was killed by a crossbow bolt while besieging
Ch�lus-Chabrol in 1199 at the age of 42-this was when he attacked the
castle of Ch�lus
He was buried in the abbey church of Fontevrault- his remains are
still preserved thereHe left no heir- John Lackland was king after him
