Triple Alliance

Secret agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed
on 20 May 1882 and renewed periodically until World War I. Germany and
Austria-Hungary had been closely allied since 1879.

Triple Entente

The understanding linking the Russian Empire, the French Third
Republic, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after
the signing of the Anglo-Russian Entente on 31 August 1907.

Central Powers

A group of nations fighting against the Allied Powers during World
War I; the members included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the
Ottoman Empire, and their territories.

Allied Powers

The countries that opposed the Central Powers in the First World War.
The members of the original Entente Alliance of 1907 were the French
Republic, the British Empire and the Russian Empire.

Belligerents

A nation or person engaged in war or conflict, as recognized by
international law.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

A type of naval warfare in which submarines sink vessels such as
freighters and tankers without warning, as opposed to attacks per
prize rules (also known as "cruiser rules").

Lusitania

A British luxury liner sunk by a German submarine in the North
Atlantic on May 7, 1915: one of the events leading to U.S. entry into
World War I.

Convoy System

A group of merchant vessels sailing together, with or without naval
escort, for mutual security and protection.

War Industries Board

A United States government agency established on July 28, 1917,
during World War I, to coordinate the purchase of war supplies. The
organization encouraged companies to use mass-production techniques to
increase efficiency and urged them to eliminate waste by standardizing products.

War Labor Policies Board

A United States federal agency created in two different incarnations,
the first by President Woodrow Wilson from 1918�19 during World War I.

Doughboys

An informal term for a member of the United States Army or Marine
Corps, especially used to refer to members of the American
Expeditionary Forces in World War I, but initially used in the
Mexican-American War of 1846-48.

Armistice Day

November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World
War I and Germany at Compi�gne, France, for the cessation of
hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at
eleven o'clock in the morning�the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day.

A statement of the war aims of the Allies, made by President Wilson
on January 8, 1918.

League of Nations

An international organization established after World War I under the
provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. The league, the forerunner of
the United Nations, brought about much international cooperation on
health, labor problems, refugee affairs, and the like.

Treaty of Versailles

It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It
was signed on 28 June 1919, exactly five years after the assassination
of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
