comparison of two things using like or as

Metaphor

comparison of two things not using like or as

Alliteration

is the repetition of the same or very similar consonant sound (NOT a, e, i, o or u) at the beginning of words

Rhyme

when two words sound alike are placed close together in a poem

Stanza

a group of lines in a poem

Personification

when nonhuman things are given human qualities

Hyperbole

an extreme exaggeration to make a point

End Rhyme

when the rhyming occurs at the end of the lines

Internal Rhyme

means words that rhyme within a line of poetry

Rhyme Scheme

the pattern of rhyming in a poem, a different letter of the alphabet is used for each line that rhymes (Example ABAB or ABBA)

Onomatopoeia

refers to words that sound like what they are describing (Bang, smash, crash, pop)

Couplet

two lines that rhyme in a poem

Imagery

language that appeals to the five senses: sound, taste, smell, touch, sight
