alliteration

the repetition of consonant sounds in a group of words.

assonance

Repetition of a vowel sound in a group of words

rhythm

a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables; cadence

rhyme

Identical or very similar recurring final sounds in words usually at the end of lines of a poem.

stanza

A group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit.

poem style

1. The way a poem is written (free verse, ballad, narrative) 2. The author's choices regarding language, sentence structure, voice, and tone in order to communicate with the reader.

symbol

Something that represents or stands for something else, esp. a material object representing something abstract.

theme

Central idea of a work of a poem or work of literature

line

unit in which a poem is divided

refrain

a repeated part of a poem, similar to a chorus in a song
