CM 3355 - Delatte - Chapter 1 Intro

rotary equipment

Equipment comprised of a driver, connector, and the driven equipment. Examples include motors, driven equipment (pumps, compressors, fans), blowers, turbines, conveyors, and feeders.

belt driver

this is an image of?

driver

Provides rotational energy in rotary equipment. (ie. motors, turbines)

torque

The turning force of rotating equipment.

Rigid and Flexible

types of fixed couplings

gearbox

Part of rotary equipment used between the driver and driven equipment with different sizes: small for speed and large for torque.

electric motor

Part of rotary equipment used with pumps, compressors, blowers, fans, etc. composed of a stationary magnet (stator) and a moving conductor (rotor).

AC Motor

this is an image of?

a. electric current creates a magnetic field
b. opposite magnetic poles attract each other and vise versa
c. current direction determines the magnetic poles

the three principals of electric motor operation:

centrifugal pump

type of rotary equipment. A Pump that moves fluids with centrifugal force by spinning the fluid in a circular motion that propels it outward (known as Principal).

positive displacement pump, rotary, reciprocating

Pump that moves fluids by stroke or rotation.
Two types:
_____ moves fluid by rotation of screws, vanes, etc
_____ displaces fluids by means of a piston or plunger.

rotary, reciprocating

Two types of positive displacement pumps:
_____ moves fluid by rotation of screws, vanes, etc
_____ displaces fluids by means of a piston or plunger.

dynamic compressor

Accelerates gas and converts kinetic energy (energy of movement) to pressure.

centrifugal, axial

Two types of dynamic compressors:
_____ uses the principal of centrifugal force
_____ uses a rotating shaft with blades to push gas over stationary blades (stators) attached to the casing. Kinetic energy is released as a form of pressure.

positive displacement compressor

Compressor that traps the gas and forces it into a smaller volume. Two types are rotary and reciprocating with principals of operation similar to pumps.

liquids, gasses

Pumps move _____. Compressors transfer _____.

steam turbine

Converts kinetic energy to mechanical energy with a rotor that rotates by steam striking it. It is used as a driver.

tank designs

tank farm

An area in a plant facility where large storage tanks are located.

filter

Separates solid particles from a fluid by passage through a porous medium.

heat exchanger

Hot fluid transfers energy in the form of heat to a cooler fluid without physical contact between the two fluids or vice versa. It is composed of a shell, tube bundle, and water box/head.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

cooling tower

Used to remove heat from water. Heat is transferred to cooler air and a major portion of the heat is stripped from the water by evaporation.

mixing reactor

distillation column

fixed heaters

water tube boiler

boilers/steam generators

Used to produce steam by heating up water.

furnaces/fired heaters

Used to heat up raw materials so products are produced. Composed of a metal shell surrounding a firebox, convection section, and a stack.

reactor

Vessel used used to convert raw materials into useful products through chemical reactions. Raw materials are combined with a catalyst, gasses, pressure, and heat to produce a transformation.

distillation system

Composed of a feed preheater, distillation tower, overhead condenser, accumulator, and reboiler.

distillation tower (column)

Utilizes trays and packing to separate chemical mixtures by the boiling points of the substances in the mixture.
