Print

To produce a paper copy of information displayed on a screen or saved on a disk.

Operator's Guide

A set of instructions accompanying equipment or software that explains how the hardware/software features are made to work.

Proofread

The process of comparing the copy of a display screen or print out to the original or source copy and to correct errors.

Margins

The specification of the number of inches left blank at the left and right of printed lines; also at the top and bottom of printed pages.

Reveal Codes

A feature that displays text along with formatting codes for features such as Bold, Center and Underline that are used in the text.

Line Spacing

A feature that allows the operator to set the number of blank lines left between lines of text; usually set to single space or double space.

Ruler Line

The line across the top or bottom of the screen that shows the position of the cursor in relation to the edges of a printed page; used to set left and right margins, tabs, and line spacing.

Insert Mode

This feature allows new text to be keyed into existing text.

Scroll

A feature that makes room for more lines of copy by causing the first line to "disappear" off the top of the screen.

Hard Return

A feature used to move the cursor to the beginning of the next line by striking the Return Key.

Soft Return

A feature that automatically moves the cursor to the beginning of the next line.

File Name

Alphabetic or numeric characters assigned to each file for identification purposes.

Software

A set of computer instructions.

File

Text stored on a disk.

Error

Any misstroke of a key; also any variation between source copy and displayed or printed copy; departure from acceptable format.

Spacing

The number of blank line spaces between printed lines -- usually indicated as SS, DS, or QS.

Document

Formatted information such as a letter, memo, report, table or form.

Bold

A feature that prints designated text darker that the rest of the copy to add emphasis.

Delete

A feature that removes a segment of text by means of the Backspace or Delete key.

Centering

A feature that centers lines of text horizontally.

Default

Preset conditions in software features such as Margins, Line Spacing, Tabs and Insert Mode; the operator may override these settings as part of formatting and keying a document.

Cursor

A light on the screen that shows where the next keystroke will be keyed.
