Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Located in anterior pit. Peptide hormone which stimulates follicle maturation in females and spermatogenesis in males.
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Located in anterior pit. Stimulates ovulation in females. Testosterone synthesis in males. Peptide hormone.
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Located in anterior pit. Peptide hormone that stimulates the adrenal cortex to synthesize/secrete glucocorticoids.
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Located in anterior pit. Peptide hormone that stimulates thyroid to produce thyroid hormones.
Prolactin
Located in the anterior pit. Peptide hormone that stimulates milk production/secretion
Endorphins
Located in anterior pit. Peptide hormones that decrease sensation of pain.
Growth Hormone (GH)
Peptide hormone located in anterior pit. that stimulates bone and muscle growth. Raises blood glucose levels.
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH; Vasopressin)
Peptide hormone released by the posterior pituitary that stimulates water reabsorption in the kidneys by increasing collecting duct permeability.
Oxytocin
Peptide hormone released by posterior pituitary that stimulates uterine contractions and acts with a positive feedback mechanism. Also milk secretion during lactation.
Triiodothyronine and Thyroxine
Amino-Acid derived hormones that are secreted by thyroid (follicular cells) and stimulate metabolic activity.
Calcitonin
Peptide hormones secreted by thyroid (parafolicular (C cells)). Decreases blood calcium concentrations.
Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
peptide hormone released by parathyroids, increases blood calcium levels.
Glucocorticoids
Steroid hormones including cortisol and cortisone that increase blood glucose concentration, decrease protein synthesis, and act as anti-inflammatory agents. Located in adrenal cortex
Mineralo-corticoids (aldosterone)
Steroid hormones located in the adrenal cortex that increase water reabsorption in the kidneys by increasing sodium reabsorption. Promote K+ and H+ excretion
Epinephrine/Norepinephrine
Amino-acid derived hormones located in the adrenal medulla. Increase Blood glucose concentration and hate rate. Alter blood flow patterns as well.
Glucagon
Peptide hormone. Produced by alpha cells in the pancreas. Stimulate glycogen breakdown into glucose, and increase blood glucose concentration
Insulin
Peptide hormone. Produced by beta cells in the pancreas. Lowers the blood glucose concentration by allowing glucose absorption into cells. Increases anabolic processes.
Somatostatin
A peptide hormone located in the pancreas produced by delta cells. Suppresses the secretion of both insulin and glucagon
Testosterone
A steroid hormone located in the testes. Develops/maintains male sex characteristics and reproductive system.
Estrogen
Steroid hormone in the ovaries that develops and maintains female sex characteristics/reproductive system.
Progesterone
Steroid hormone in the ovaries that promotes maintenance of endometrium.
Melatonin
Peptide hormone located in pineal gland, involved in sleep-wake cycles.
Erythropoietin
Peptide hormone located in the kidneys that stimulates bone marrow to produce erythrocytes.
Atrial Natriuretic peptide
Peptide hormone located in heart that promotes salt and water excretion
Thymosin
Peptide located in thymus that promotes T cell development.
