Plot

Authors purpose

The reason the author writes a work;usually to express thoughts or feelings, to inform or explain;to persuade;to entertain

Central idea

The main point or message the author wants to communicate

Supporting details

Facts,opinions,examples and anecdotes that the author provides to make his or her point

Summary

A brief retelling of the most important events in a story

Dialogue

Written conversation between two or more characters

Conflict

A struggle between opposing forces in a story ;a problem to be solved

Glossary

A place in the back of the book that gives the definitions or tells the meanings of certain words in the book

Personal essay

A short week of non-fiction that usually reflects the writer's experiences ;may be written in 1st or 3rd person(narrative essay)

Repetition

a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity

Simile

A comparison of two things using "like"or "as

Metaphor

A comparison of two things without using "like" or "as

Exposition

The first stage of a typical story plot ;provides important background information and introduces the setting and important characters

Rising action

The stage of the plot that develops the conflict or struggle

Climax

The point of greatest interest in a story

Falling action

The stage of the plot in which the story begins to draw to a close

Resolution

The final outcome of the story;how it ends
