The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse, and has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US.

Schedule I Examples

Heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), 3,4-methylenedioxymethampetamine (ecstasy), methaqualone, and peyote.

Schedule II

The drug of other substance has a high potential for abuse, and has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions. Abuse of the drug or other substances may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

Schedule II Examples

Products with less than 15 milligrams of hydrocodone per dosage unit (Vicodin), cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), meperidine (Demerol),oxycodone 9OxyContin), fentanyl, Dexedrine, Adderall, and Ritalin.

Schedule III

The drug or other substance had a potential for abuse less than the drugs or other substances in schedules I and II. The drug or other substance has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US. Abuse of the drugs or other substance may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.

Schedule III Examples

Products containing less than 90 milligrams of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol w/ codeine), ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone.

Schedule IV

The drug or other substance has a low potential for abuse relative to the drugs or other substances in schedule III. The drug or other substance has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US. Abuse of the drug or other substance may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs or other substances in schedule III.

Schedule IV Examples

Fenfluramine, Lorcaserin, Xanan, Soma, Darvon, Darvocet, Valium, Ativan, Talwin, Ambien, and Tramadol.

Schedule V

The drug or other substance has a low potential for abuse relative to the drugs or other substances in schedule IV. The drug or other substance has a currently accepted medial use in treatment in the US. Abuse of the drug or other substance may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs or other substances in schedule IV.

Schedule V Examples

Cough preparations with less than 200 milligrams of codeine or per 100 milliliters (Robitussin AC), Lomotil, Motofen, Lyric, and Parepectolin.
