Math vocabulary 1

irrational numbers

Basically pie or root but root 4 can be rational

Rational Numbers can be represented by?

Includes: Whole Numbers, Positives/Negatives, Zero, and all decimals that either terminate or repeat.

All the sets of numbers

Real, rational, integers, whole, natural

Commutative Property

The property that says that two or more numbers can be added or multiplied in any order without changing the result. XY = YX or 2 + 3= 3 + 2

Distribution Property

a(b+c) = ab + ac

Associative Property

Changing the grouping of numbers will NOT change the value. For example: (7 + 4) + 8 = 7 + (4 + 8) also works with multiplication

Additive Identity

a + 0 = a or x + 0 = x basically just saying if you add zero it keeps the number the same

Multiplicative Identity

When any number is multiplied by 1, the product is the number 2 (1) = 2 or x (1) = x

Additive Inverse

The opposite of a number. When added together, the sum is zero. 2 + -2 = 0 or x + -x =0

Multiplicative Inverse

Two numbers with a product of 1. For example, the multiplicative inverse of 2/3 is 3/2. X ( 1 / x) = 1
