A two-dimensional, or flat, representation of Earth's surface or a portion of it.

Geographic Information System

A computer system that stores, organizes, analyzes, and displays geographic data.

absolute location

The exact position of a place on the earth's surface.

relative location

where a place is located in relation to another place

continent

one of the seven large landmasses on the earth

Prime Meridian

The meridian, designated at 0° longitude, which passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England.

Latitude

the lines on a map that run east to west

Equator

0 degrees latitude

Longitude

imaginary lines that go around the earth over the poles

Global Positioning System (GPS)

Satellite-based system for determining the absolute location of places or geographic features.

Elevation

The height of land above sea level

the difference in elevation between the highest and lowest parts of an area
