occurs when an author uses descriptive language that appeals to the 5 senses.

main idea of a work of literature.

something that stands for itself and something else

Irony

occurs when the outcome of a story is opposite of what is expected.

omniscient narrator

all-knowing.

point of view

the vantage point from which a story is told.

Setting

the time and place of a story.

plot

a series of related events that make up a story.

Exposition

the beginning of the story. It reveals details.

Climax

the turning point of a story.

Resolution

the end of the story.

Conflict

a struggle or clash between opposing forces.

Internal conflict

a struggle withina character's own mind.

External conflict

a struggle with outside forces.

flashback

returns to an earlier moment in literary time.
