Grammatical Meaning

Interpreting Literary Text

trying to find meaning and significance

Context Clues

hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meaning of new or unfamiliar words.

analyze

an argument about a literary work that expresses a writer's personal perspective, interpretation, judgment, or critical evaluation of the work.

literary text

a story about people, animals, or events that is made up by an author.

literary genre

a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

purpose

an author's purpose or reason/intent in writing. (amuse, persuade, inform,or satirize a condition)

literal language

(denotation) is used to mean exactly what is written or said. Ex: He was stranded without food and he starved to death.

metaphor

a direct comparison of two unrelated objects. One of the most common literary devices. Ex: The tree is the god of the forest.

simile

- an indirect comparison, where two unrelated objects are being compared to each other. Ex: This tree is like the god of the forest.
