What is the difference between a state and a nation?

Country and State are synonymous terms that both apply to self-governing political entities. A nation is a group of people who share the same culture but do not have sovereignty.

How is government conducted under a dictatorship?

A dictatorship is a form of government in which one person or an oligarchy possesses absolute power without effective constitutional checks.

What is the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy?

In a dictatorship power is held by a single person or by a small group, and in a democracy the power is rests with a majority of the people.

How does a constitution help to make it possible for a government to carry out its laws?

The constitution sets out the basic principles, structures, processes, and functions of a government, and places limits upon its actions.

What are the three branches of the US government?

Legislative, executive, and judicial are the three branches of government.

What does the legislative branch do?

Legislative branch makes the laws.

What does the executive branch do?

Executive branch carries out the laws.

What does the judicial branch do?

Judicial branch interprets the laws.

What are the four characteristics to make up a state?

Population, territory, sovereignty and government.

What is the Force Theory?

An individual or group claimed control over a territory and forced the population to submit. In this way, the state became sovereign, and those in control formed a governments.

What is the Evolutionary Theory?

A population formed out of primitive families. The heads of these families became the government. When these families settled in one territory and claimed it as their own, they became a sovereign state.

What is the Divine Right Theory?

God created the state, making it sovereign. The government is made up of those chosen by God to rule a certain territory. The people (population) must obey their ruler.

What are the six main purposes of the government?

Occurs when the will of the people translates directly into public policy.

What is Indirect Democracy?

A group of persons chosen by the people express the will of the people.

What is a Unitary Government?

Centralized government.

What is a Federal Government?

Powers are divided between a central government and several local governments.

What is a Confederate Government?

An alliance between independent states.

What is a Presidential Government?

Features a separation of powers between the executive and the legislative branches of government.

What is a Parliamentary Government?

Where the executive branch is made up of the prime minister or premier, and that official's cabinet.

How is power distributed in a federal government?

In a federal government, power is distributed between the federal or national government and the state governments, both of which coexist with sovereignty

How does a federal state differ from a confederate state?

They differ because a federal state's national government and states are coequal partners and in a confederate state most power belongs to local (regional) governments.

What is the relationship between the executive and legislative branch in a parliamentary government?

In a parliamentary government, the executive is chosen by the legislature.

In what two ways does the democracy require the equality of all persons?

Why is compromise so important in a democracy?

It's important because in a democracy all of the people are represented and all of the people need to be served.

What is majority rule?

the principle that the greater number should exercise greater power.

What is a free enterprise system?

An economic system where few restrictions are placed on business activities and ownership. In this system, governments generally have minimal ownership of enterprises in the market place. This system aims for limited restrictions on trade and minimal government intervention.

What is public policies?

All of the things the government decides to do.
