Quiz 3

1/10 @ B-25. Defensive end B88 is lined up on the outside shoulder of tackle of A75. On the initial line charge, B88 blocks tackle A75 below the waist from the side inside the tackle box. A44 gains 4 yards on the play.

A, 2/6, B-21, Running. No foul for an illegal block below the waist. B88 is considered inside the Tackle Box if he is catching any piece of a tackle who is lined up in the tackle box. (Rule 9-1-6-b-1).

1/10 @ A-30. As ball carrier A20 sweeps around the end and heads upfield, he lowers his head and contacts defensive end B89 who is trying to tackle him. B89's head is up and the players meet helmet to helmet at the A-35 where A20 is downed.

A, 2/5, A-35, Running. No foul. Neither A20 nor B89 is a defenseless player and neither has targeted his opponent in the sense of Rule 9-1-3. B89 keeps his head up and does not target A20 with the crown of the helmet

1/10 @ B-45. Ball carrier A33 has gained several yards and is in the grasp of two defenders. A33's forward progress has been stopped at the B-40 and he is clearly being driven back, but the ball has not been declared dead. Linebacker B55 crouches and thrusts himself forward, driving his forearm into the side of A33's helmet at the B-42.

A, 1/10, B-25, Ready. Targeting a defenseless player (Rule 9-1-4) by B55. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the end of A33's run which is the B-40. B55 is disqualified. A33 is a defenseless player since he is in the grasp of the opponents and his forward progress has clearly been stopped. (Rule 2-27-14).

On a one-point try attempt from the B-3, Team A's kick is blocked. B21 recovers the ball and advances across Team A's goal line. During B21's run, B44 clips

No score, and the try is over. A, Free Kick, A-35, FK Rules. The foul by B44 is after the change of possession so the score is cancelled, and the try is ended (Rule 8- 3-4-b). Since the personal foul was not flagrant, the penalty is declined by rule, and since the personal foul was not flagrant the penalty does not carry over to the succeeding kickoff (Rule 8-3-4-a).

Try @ B-3. B79 is in the neutral zone at the snap. B20 intercepts a forward pass and A55 tackles him by pulling the face mask.

: Replay the Try. A, Try, B-3, No Clock. Since Team B's foul was before the change of possession, the fouls offset and the try is repeated (Rule 8-3-3-a).

4/6 @ B-18. Team A's unsuccessful field goal attempt strikes the ground beyond the neutral zone and bounces back behind the neutral zone to Team B's 28-yard line, where it goes out of bounds. The kick was untouched beyond the neutral zone.

B, 1/10, B-28, Snap. The ball was untouched beyond the neutral zone, and rebounded behind the neutral zone and went out of bounds so the ball belongs to Team B at the dead ball spot (Rules 6-3-7, and 8-4-2- b-3)

3/5 @ B-20. Defensive back B44 intercepts a forward pass in his end zone. While still in the end zone he fumbles the ball. It rolls forward, goes into the field of play, and in the scramble the ball goes back into the end zone where B44 recovers while grounded.

Safety - score 2 points for Team A. B, Free Kick, B-20, FK Rules. The initial impetus for the ball being in the end zone was the pass by Team A. The impetus for the ball going into the end zone the second time is B44's fumble. The scramble to recover the ball does not add new impetus (Rule 8-7-2).

Free Kick @ A-35. The ball is rolling on the ground on Team B's three-yard line when B10 kicks the ball into the end zone and over the end line.

Safety - Score 2 points for Team A or Re-kick @ A-45. Safety, due to the new impetus by B10 (Rule 8-7-2-b-1). The action by B10 is a foul for illegally kicking the ball. If the penalty (10 yards) is accepted, the down is repeated with the free kick at the A-45 (Rules 9-4-4 and 10-2-2-d-4-a)

3/10 @ B-30. With 0:50 remaining in the 4th quarter Team A trails 28-23 and is out of timeouts. Receiver A87 catches a pass and is immediately tackled by B50 at the B-32 (0:45). There are no flags on the play and Team A rushes to the line, but the RO stops the game to review possible targeting (0:37). Replays show B50 had his head down and attacked with the crown of his helmet making forcible contact to A87's chest

A 1/10 @ B-15, DQ B50, adjust clock to 0:45, snap/option. This is targeting 9-1-3 for attacking with the crown of the helmet and a foul regardless of whether A87 is defenseless or where the contact occurs. By creating the foul replay is creating a stopped clock so it is reset to where it was at end of down and will start on the snap at the option of Team A. Since the run ended behind the neutral zone, penalize 15 yards from the previous spot. B50 is disqualified and will miss the 1st half of next game.

4/7 @ B-20. Late in the 2nd Quarter Team A's field goal attempt is wide right and time expires. The ball actually hit the ground beyond the end line with 0:01 remaining.

Half over. In the first half putting the time back on the clock will not have a significant competitive effect since Team B would have the ball at their own 20-yard line. At the end of the first half the team with the ball next would have to snap from their own 40-yard line or better. If this occurred at the end of the second half and the score was tied or within eight points replay will put the time back on the clock.
