PROCLAMATION of 1763

Prohibited colonists from migrating (moving to the area) west of the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists weren't allowed to settle or buy land there.

STAMP ACT

American colonists had to pay tax on newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents and playing cards. They had to buy a stamp from the government and attach it to what they bought.

BOSTON MASSACRE

Violent conflict between the Colonists and British soldiers. (British guards opened fire on a crowd killing five Americans. This was the first bloodshed in the American Revolution)

QUARTERING ACT

Colonists had to give British troops (soldiers) food and shelter (let them live in their house).

BOSTON TEA PARTY

In 1773, citizens of Boston disguised themselves as Indians & raided 3 British ships in Boston harbor and then dumped hundreds of chests of tea into the harbor.

FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

Delegates from all colonies met to talk about the problems with Britain because of taxes and to encourage independence.

SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

In 1776 after the battles of Lexington and Concord, the delegates wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence which made the colonies independent of Britain.
