RESPIRATORY SYS & FUNCTIONS

I.) FUNCTION:

* Moves air in/out of the lungs* Delivers O2* Removes CO2* External respiration: occurs in the lungs* Internal respiration: Occurs in the Hemoglobin

II) ORGANS:

* Nose * :Pharynx * Larynx* Trachea * Bronchial Tree * Lungs

III) Nasal Cavity:

1. Nasal Septum divides the cavity in/2 the LT/RT portions2.) Mucous membrane warms & moistens in the air3) Cilia {Hair} helps eliminate particles
*Air filled spaces w/in the skull bones. Open 2 the nasal cavity* Reduce the wieght of the skull* Gives the voice a certain tone

IV): PHARYNX

* Serves both Respiratory & Digestive Sys

V) LARYNX {Voice Box}

* Moves Air in/out of the Trachea & produces voice* Composed by 3 Categories:
1. Thyroid Cartilage2. Epiglottli or Epiglottis Cartilage3. Cricoid Cartilage

Va} VOCAL CORDS:

* Stretched bet. the Thyroid cartilage & Cricoid Cart. {Across}* Upper - False Cords* Lower - True Cords* Glottis - The "Opening" bet the Vocal Cords* Stretch - Pitch of the Voice

VI} TRACHEA:

* Referred as the "Wind Pipe"* Tubular org made up of "rings of cartilage & smooth muscle"* Extends frm the Larynx 2 the Bronchi* Lined w/cells possesing the Cilia** Cilia moves Mucus up 2 the throat; smoking destroys Cilia

VII} Bronchial Tree:

1. Bronchi - 1st branches of the Trachea2. Bronchioles - 2ndary Branches3. Alveoli - Place of gas exchange process3.1 - This "sac" of the cells is surrounded by Capillaries3.2 - Secret surfactant

VIII} LUNGS:

* Cone: Shaped org* RT/Lung: (3) Lobes* LT/Lung: (2) Lobes* Pleura: Membrane surrounding the Lungs
