Positive Aging Module 8 Key Terms

death awareness movement

A response to the increasing number of very old people in American
society, the prolongation of the dying process, the anxieties of the
nuclear age, the 1960s perspective that asserted the rights of the
ignored and underprivileged (in this case the dying), and the AIDS
epidemic. It has led to the analysis of cultural messages about death,
increased sensitivity to the dying, and increased education about death.

the good death

A death that is appropriate to the dying person. In the contemporary
United States, it typically refers to a death in which the dying
person is surrounded by family and friends with minimal technological interference.
